For any condition requiring immediate medical attention from a specially trained emergency medical team, the Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center Emergency Department (ED) doors are always open. Emergency care is a step up in urgency from Walk-In Care.
Approximately 35,000 people a year (or 100 people each day) seek medical treatment in our Emergency Department. Getting the right care at the right time is very important during an emergency. People with serious illnesses and injuries, such as severe pain, bleeding, a high fever, or people who are showing symptoms of a heart attack or stroke, should not hesitate to call 9-1-1 and come to the Emergency Department right away.

People with non-urgent conditions are encouraged to visit their primary care physician or other healthcare provider during regular office hours. Your own provider knows your medical history best and can provide you with the necessary follow-up care. If an appointment is not available with your provider, you can access Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center’s Walk-In Care Center located at 915 Union Street in Bangor.
Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center ‘s ED works closely with Northern Light Acadia Hospital to provide emergency psychiatric treatment and assessment of psychiatric illnesses. Some people may benefit from accessing Northern Light Acadia Hospital directly, while others may need to be seen in the ED.
