Program Overview
Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center offers a “best of both worlds” place to teach and learn family medicine: a tertiary care, big-city size and quality hospital with an unopposed, rural medicine training focus, and leadership invested in the success of the program and rooted in family medicine.
The Eastern Maine Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program is a 30 resident ACGME accredited program with osteopathic recognition. Our training emphasis prepares our graduates to practice in rural settings. We are an unopposed residency based at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, a 411-bed community owned, and governed non-profit hospital that serves as the referral center for northern and eastern Maine. Eastern Maine Medical Center is part of Northern Light Health and serves as the regional tertiary care and ACS verified level II trauma center. Our patient population of 500,000 lives in the northern two-thirds of the state's geography. The hospital is a base for Life Flight of Maine, a critical care air transportation service flying nearly 900 missions per year. Outpatient experience is based at our new state-of-the-art facility, Northern Light Family Medicine and Residency, and Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center.
As a resident, you start your first day of residency as a family physician for the community of Bangor and surrounding areas of Maine. Your work as a family physician is supported and supervised by experienced full-time faculty, part-time clinical faculty, visiting preceptors, an extensive network of affiliated specialists. You are a member of a collaborative team with additional staff including family nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, clinical pharmacists, a practice manager, registered nurses, medical assistants, RN care managers, and an integrated behavioral health team of licensed clinical social workers. The team at Northern Light Family Medicine and Residency strives to develop you into a well-rounded family physician to whom they would entrust the care of their own family members, and often, they do!
It is our goal that by the end of your family medicine residency, you will be prepared to care for patients from birth to death with an emphasis on knowing and treating the whole patient. You will be proficient in inpatient and outpatient medicine, a comprehensive range of procedures, obstetrics, pediatrics, acute and emergency care, gynecology, preventative medicine, geriatrics, osteopathic medicine and more.
All family medicine residencies nationally have set standards for a base curriculum, but there are many reasons your training at Eastern Maine Medical Center will be unique. Family medicine is a “choose your own adventure” kind of specialty, in that your scope can be as broad, or narrow, as you’d like. We are committed to providing you with a solid broad-spectrum foundation and preparing you for your chosen scope with proficiency, satisfaction and JOY!
