Pediatric Surgery

Surgery can be a scary experience for children and their families, but the Northern Light Pediatric Surgery team will take the time to make our youngest patients feel at ease. Understanding what will happen during surgery can make a real difference for children. Join Gracie as she has her tonsils taken out and learn what it’s like to have surgery at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center.

We know it is a stressful experience for families when one of their children needs surgery. Northern Light Pediatric Surgery has a team of healthcare professionals that will care for the baby and the family.

Our pediatric surgeons care for children of all ages, newborns to adolescents, and provide care for the entire range of general pediatric surgery. Prenatal visits with our surgeons are also encouraged to counsel parents expecting a baby who may have been diagnosed before birth with a surgical problem. We are here to help you through the process every step of the way.

Our pediatric specialty services and team includes two fellowship trained pediatric surgeons to provide comprehensive surgical care right here in Bangor. Our pediatric surgeons, Dr. Nathalie Brewer and Dr. Whitney McBride, work closely with our pediatric specialists and local pediatricians to provide high quality surgical care close to home. It is a tightly knit, well-oiled healthcare team dedicated to getting you and your baby home.

All aspects of pediatric surgery to treat common conditions like hernias, appendicitis, and removal of masses, to the highly complex procedures not performed anywhere else in the region, are available at Northern Light Pediatric Surgery. Many of the surgeries performed with Laparoscopic Minimally Invasive Surgery use very small incisions that reduce pain and allow for a quicker recovery and return to normal activities.

Pediatric surgical conditions treated here include common pediatric surgical problems such as:
  • Appendicitis
  • Umbilical hernias and epigastric hernias
  • Inguinal hernias and undescended testicle
  • Phimosis or redundant foreskin
  • Neck fistulas
  • Benign masses such as lipoma, ganglion cysts (dermoid cyst, nevus, “lumps and bumps”)
  • Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis
  • Care for children with feeding difficulties requiring feeding tube access
Complex conditions diagnosed and treated as an interdisciplinary team:
  • Neonatal conditions requiring surgery
  • Complex congenital malformations
  • Surgery of congenital lung malformations
  • Chest wall deformities
  • Pediatric solid tumors
  • Hirschsprung’s  Disease

You can’t get here from there? Well, in this case, you can — we care for children from a very large geographic region. Our goal is to provide high quality surgical care, and help children and families stay closer to home for their care. We heal faster at home, we are happier, calmer, and sleep better at home — we will work hard to get you and you baby home.
