Community Benefit & Sponsorship Program

Northern Light Health is committed to making healthcare work better for our patients and communities. Partnering with organizations to address community health needs and making strategic investments that improve health and quality of life for the people of Maine, is one way that we make a difference for those we serve.

This Community Benefit and Sponsorship application targets statewide and multi-county initiatives.

Northern Light Health reviews requests on a triannual basis and funding is subject to availability at the time of the request. If approved, the organization receiving the funds must submit an invoice as well as any other required documents to process the award. Application timelines are as follows:

Projects funded by Northern Light Health are to be completed and reported upon before the end of the fiscal year in which they were approved (October 1 – September 30).

Applications must meet the following criteria to be considered for support:
  • Must reach or serve community members and enhance population health statewide or across multiple counties.


Projects must align with one or more of the following community impact categories:

  • Northern Light Health community health improvement priorities

    • (i.e., includes prevention, treatment and recovery of substance use disorder, promoting food security and addressing social needs)

  • Improve access to healthcare or community services, especially for vulnerable and underserved people.

    • (i.e., includes transportation, housing, clinical and behavioral health initiatives)

  • Build community and improve quality of life

    • (i.e., includes economic, workforce or community leadership development, environmental sustainability and public access to the arts)


Northern Light Health, generally, will not consider funding requests for one or more of the categories below:

  • Political organizations

  • Social groups

  • School yearbooks or sports events/calendars/posters/placemats

  • Endowments, annual funds, capital campaigns, or memorials

  • Field trips or tours

  • Travel related expenses

  • General operating expenses

  • Individuals or individual families

  • Employees or other individual participation in a fundraising event or activity
  • ​Unrestricted donations

Applicants should be aware of the following: 

  • Only nonprofit organizations (501 (c)(3), or other designated) may apply for sponsorship 

  • Funding awarded to organization(s) for one year does not guarantee funding in future years. 

  • Organizations which receive funding are committed to assessing and reporting back to Northern Light Health on the community impact of their project.

  • Generally, we only accept one request from an organization per fiscal year (October 1- September 30) 

  • Requests are reviewed throughout the fiscal year and funding is subject to availability at the time of the request. 

  • Projects funded by Northern Light Health are to be completed and reported upon before the end of the fiscal year in which they were approved (October 1- September 30).

Tier one: (up to $500)

  • Submission of an itemized budget outlining how the funding will be used

  • Within 30 days of completion of the project/event, the submission of a brief report is required

 

Tier two: ($501- $4,999)

  • Submission of an itemized budget outlining how the funding will be used

  • Within 30 days of completion of the project/event, the submission of a brief report is required

  • If applicable, co-branding or public recognition of the sponsorship will be required

 

Tier Three: ($5,000-$10,000)

  • Significant initiatives which address a Northern Light Health Community Health Improvement Priorities:

    • Food insecurity

    • Addressing social needs

    • Increasing access to prevention, treatment and recovery for substance use disorders

  • Submission of an itemized budget outlining how the funding will be used

  • Within 30 days of completion of the project/event, the submission of the impact report will be required. This will include a photo of the event demonstrating how it has positively impacted the community.

  • Co-branding and/or recognition of Northern Light Health sponsorship will be required
