Call Responsibility

Call Schedule
At Northern Light Acadia Hospital, we have developed a call schedule that allows residents to learn and to gradually develop a sense of mastery and confidence around medical decision making. This aligns with our emphasis on resident wellness and creates a trusting and collaborative learning environment while mitigating the negative impacts of burnout and sleep deprivation. The current call schedule for each year is as described below:
 
PGY1

  • While on an inpatient Adult or Child Adolescent Service (six months), Residents will work one weekend a month covering 0800 to 1600 shifts both days. However, there will be no call for the residents for the first of those six months as they get used to the workings of our inpatient services.
  • Responsibilities include assessments and orders on new patients seen with the Attending Physician, and managing psychiatric emergencies under the supervision of the attending.
  • Family Medicine Inpatient: no call—however Monday through Saturday workweek while on service
  • Internal Medicine Outpatient: no call
  • Neurology: no call —however Monday through Saturday workweek while on service

 
PGY2

  • While on an inpatient Adult or Child Adolescent Service (five months), Residents will work one weekend a month covering 0800 to 1600 shifts both days.
  • Responsibilities include assessments and orders on new patients seen with the Attending Physician, and managing psychiatric emergencies under the supervision of the attending
  • Neuromodulation: no call Emergency
  • Psychiatry: no call
  • Consultation Liaison Psychiatry: no call

 
PGY3

  • Third-year Residents will work on Friday evening shift (end of workday till midnight) once per month covering the house at Northern Light Acadia Hospital.
  • Responsibilities will include assessments and orders on new patients, management of phone requests from the inpatient units, managing psychiatric emergencies (including face-to-face evaluations for restraints.)


PGY4

  • No call, though 4th year residents can pick up extra shifts (moonlighting) for evening coverage at Northern Light Acadia Hospital subject to availability.
