Healthy Peninsula Community Resource Guide

The Healthy Peninsula Community Resource Guide is a database of primarily non-profit health and human service resources in greater Hancock County, Maine. It features information to keep community members and professionals alike connected with up-to-date resource and program listings, including state-wide resources that are available to families, seniors, adults with chronic illness and caregivers on the Blue Hill Peninsula, Stonington and Deer Isle and across Hancock County. The development of this website is a collaboration of Blue Hill Hospital and Healthy Peninsula, generously funded thanks to the Thriving In Place Downeast grant awarded to Healthy Peninsula and their nine community partners by the Maine Health Access Foundation.

To keep this website current and useful, everyone’s input is critical. Please help build this list of resources by suggesting a listing. Together we'll build an informed, healthy community.

Maine AIM (Accessible Instruction Materials)

Maine AIM (Accessible Instructional Materials) All students learn best when information is presented in a way that matches their individual learning styles. While some students may learn best when information is presented visually, other students may learn best from hearing the content, others may need to feel and touch the material, and still others may need a combination of these methods. For some students, a disability such as visual impairment, blindness, physical disability, or a learning disability may interfere with learning. When the disability prevents the student from being able to learn from printed instructional materials (e.g., standard print textbooks, trade books, and handouts), schools identify the student as having a “print disability” and provide the student with the appropriate Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM) and assistive technology (AT). In keeping with the Maine Department of Education’s goal of improving student outcomes and graduation rates through the use of the principles of Universal Design for Learning, the Maine AIM Program is a resource to Maine educators and families for information on how to: identify students with print disabilities, and select, acquire and use AIM. Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM) are specialized formats of curricular content that can be used by and with learners with print-disabilities. They include Braille, audio, digital text, and large print.

Legal Services for the Elderly

Clients: Legal Services for the Elderly (LSE) provides free civil legal services to Mainers age 60 and older.  All legal services from LSE originate with an individual calling the Helpline and doing an intake over the telephone. An intake paralegal will need to speak with the potential client or someone who has legal authority to act on his or her behalf to do an intake. Helpline attorneys assist callers with a broad range of legal issues, such as debt problems, housing issues, elder abuse and exploitation, Social Security and public benefits problems, powers of attorney and MaineCare and questions. LSE also offers full legal representation for administrative and court proceedings in certain circumstances, generally those in which a senior’s basic needs are being threatened, including elder abuse and financial exploitation, eviction, foreclosure defense, and public benefit appeals. If a case is appropriate for extended representation by LSE, a helpline attorney will refer the matter to a staff attorney. These attorneys are willing to accept referrals from LSE at a reduced fee if the senior has limited financial means and requires more extensive assistance than the Helpline can provide. For free and confidential legal advice, seniors are encouraged to call the LSE Helpline at 1-800-750-5353. LSE also provides information on Medicare for callers of all ages. LSE has a statewide Medicare Part D Appeals Unit that helps seniors and people with disabilities of any age who have (or are eligible for) Medicare get needed prescription medications. For more information, call the LSE Part D Unit at 1-877-774-7772.
