Acadia Hospital Psychiatry Residency

Joshua Newman, MD

Message from our Program Director
Joshua Newman, MD

First, let me thank you for your interest in our program. While our program is new, the traditions of clinical excellence that we teach are not. Our diverse faculty and committed clinical partners are very excited to join you on your professional journey. Northern Light Acadia Hospital is a special place.

We continually strive for excellence in all we do
We embrace innovation and engage the larger community in collaborative ventures
We value teamwork
We see ourselves as life-long learners and teachers

The opportunity to guide the next generation of psychiatrists is a great privilege and a tremendous responsibility. Our work is critically important, and we are practicing during a period of great instability in our health care delivery systems and communities. Old ways of thinking and practicing are being rapidly replaced by new ways of thinking about mental illness and each other.

Your well-being is a priority. We know that every member of our team needs to have a work-life balance and the ability to manage their own stress. We have designed our curriculum to ensure that you can comfortably fulfill your other life roles. We believe that balance is critical to personal wellness and the effective practice of psychiatry.

Psychiatry is both art and science. We will partner with you to learn the theories, techniques, and interventions needed by a practicing psychiatrist, and to create a biopsychosocial and culturally informed basis for understanding each patient.

To those of you who join us, thank you for helping us make a difference and welcome to our family.

Our Mission

The Psychiatry Residency Program at Northern Light Acadia Hospital exists to train the next generation of leaders in the delivery of mental health care.

To this end, we will provide the didactics, direct clinical experiences, and research opportunities that will prepare our residents to master the theories, neurobiological bases, and psychodynamic underpinnings of all aspects of psychiatric care across the lifespan.

This knowledge base must be built on a foundation of caring, respect, dignity, and belonging for every patient, family, and community member we have the privilege of serving, regardless of race, gender identity, religion, national origin, age, physical ability, or sexual orientation.

Thus, our curriculum, which will run through all four years and touch all aspects of training, will invite the residents to learn more about themselves as they become life-long learners in the areas of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Finally, we are committed to the principle that all caregivers must themselves be well-versed in self-care. Our program will provide specific resources as well as promote the importance of a work-life balance.

We look forward to helping you grow.
