Five essential tips for making your new gym routine stick

Every year, countless individuals pledge to kick-start their fitness journey. However, maintaining a new gym routine can be challenging. Here are five practical tips from Andrew VanEss, MBA, manager, Wellness Program, Northern Light Beacon Health, to add some movement into the new year and ensure your fitness resolutions don’t fizzle out.

Set Realistic Goals
Begin by setting achievable goals. Rather than aiming for a dramatic transformation overnight, focus on smaller, incremental changes. Be consistent—small changes add up over time. Whether it's improving endurance, increasing strength, or losing a certain amount of weight, ensure your goals are specific, measurable, and attainable.

Create a Balanced Routine
A well-rounded workout plan includes a mix of cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and flexibility workouts. This not only prevents boredom but also ensures a comprehensive approach to fitness. Also, don’t forget to have some fun—find exercises that you enjoy doing and are within your limitations. If needed, talk to your primary care provider or consult with a trainer to create a routine that aligns with your goals and fitness level.

Track Your Progress
Monitoring your progress is incredibly motivating and a great way to not only track where you’re going but how far you’ve come. Use a fitness app, journal, or a simple spreadsheet to record your workouts and achievements. Celebrate small victories, like running a bit farther, lifting a little more, or maintaining a consistent workout frequency.

Find an Accountability Partner
Having someone to share your fitness journey with can significantly boost your commitment. Partner with a friend, join a fitness community, or hire a personal trainer. An accountability partner can provide encouragement, share tips, and help keep you on track.

Be Flexible and Patient
Each person’s wellness looks different and there are so many ways to achieve results. Understand that there will be days when you might not be able to stick to your routine. Instead of being hard on yourself, be flexible. Adjust your schedule as needed and remember that progress takes time. The key is progress, not perfection.

Adopting a new gym routine and adding more movement into your days is a commendable step towards a healthier lifestyle. And, remember: The person at the top of the mountain didn’t start from there. So, show up each day, have some fun, and keep putting one foot in front of the other.
