McAuley Residence 5K Walk/Run Raises Record Amount to Help Women in Recovery

Date: 09/23/2023

Today, Northern Light Mercy Hospital hosted its most successful McAuley Residence 5K Walk/Run for Recovery to date. Proceeds from the event benefit its comprehensive, two-generation housing and support program for families affected by substance use disorder, abuse, mental illness, and other traumas.

McAuley Residence, a program of Mercy Hospital, has evolved since its founding in 1988 by the Sisters of Mercy who established the transitional housing program to serve underserved single women and mothers. Currently, there are programs in Portland and Bangor. It is the only program of its kind in Maine which allows mothers in recovery to live with their children.

“The need across the state is tremendous, and the McAuley Residence model has been successful in helping hundreds of families heal,” said Melissa Skahan, Vice President for Mission Integration at Mercy Hospital.

Established in 2017, the McAuley Residence 5K Walk/Run for Recovery raised a record amount this year thanks in large part to the support of event sponsors, including KeyBank, MTV Solutions, Journey Magazine, the Portland Food Co-Op, and Hannaford.

“KeyBank is committed to partnering with local organizations to address the challenges facing our communities, and we are proud to be a longtime supporter of McAuley Residence.  It was an honor for KeyBank to be the presenting sponsor for today’s event to benefit women in recovery and their children,” said Tony DiSotto, KeyBank Maine Market President.

“I walked in broken, helpless, and full of shame. McAuley Residence helped me realize my own potential. I am now a college student with a 4.0 GPA and will graduate with a degree in medical assisting in 2024. I like having that connection to McAuley after graduation because I genuinely believe that the life I was meant to live started the moment I walked through their doors. I will forever be grateful for them,” said Amanda, a McAuley Residence graduate.
