Getting a mammogram can save your life

Date: 09/29/2023

Presque Isle, Maine (September 28, 2023) — Mammograms are one of the most important tools we have to help screen for and diagnose breast cancer. And thankfully, today these tests are not like the ones you or your mother had even a decade ago.

As we head into Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, what better time than to address the importance of mammograms in early detection, learn why they are more accurate and easier to schedule than ever, and be reminded of when to schedule one.

A mammogram is the best way to find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localized stage, the five-year relative survival rate is 99 percent, which shows how critical early detection is.

Most hospitals, including Northern Light AR Gould Hospital in Presque Isle, now offer 3D mammograms, which have a significantly higher detection rate of breast cancer than that of 2D mammography. Women also benefit from the fact that 3D mammograms have faster exam times and less false positive results.

“3D mammograms are the gold standard for breast cancer screening” says Alan Mautz, MD, radiologist at AR Gould Hospital. “With 3D technology, the patient knows sooner if there is a problem, and just as importantly, sooner if there is no problem.”

So, with how important a mammogram is, why do people sometimes delay getting one?

Sometimes it may be that a woman is not comfortable with the idea or unsure what to expect, particularly if it is the first time getting a mammogram. But other times, it can be as simple as the busy lives we all lead. Women are often juggling work and families, and experience shows us that they put the healthcare needs of their family above their own.

To help remove the roadblock of having to make a phone call during business hours, Northern Light is now offering online scheduling. This tool is available 24-hours a day, seven-days a week for patients can schedule their mammogram. They just need to go to NorthernLightHealth.org/ScheduleAMammogram.

Wondering when to get a mammogram? General guidelines are that women get their first mammogram at age 40, continuing to get one annually after that.

“Keep in mind, it’s important to get regular screenings even if you are feeling fine,” advises Dr. Mautz. “It’s okay to be nervous, but please do it anyway. Knowing about your health makes it easier to take care of any issues and may lengthen or save your life.”
