American Flag rededicated in honor of Nathaniel T. Cobb, former Inland President

Date: 01/19/2024

We rededicated the American Flag in our lobby this week and wanted to share the history of why it is extra special to us. The flag was originally dedicated in 2014 by Sue Cobb, a recent Inland retiree with 45 years of dedicated service, and her brother David Cobb in honor of their father Nathaniel T. Cobb who was a former president of Inland in the 1970s (known then as the Waterville Osteopathic Hospital). The base of the flag shows two plaques that honor Mr. Cobb and his family. The flag was Mr. Cobb’s original flag from his home. A World War II veteran, he was known across the country as the Flag Man dedicating many flags throughout our US states. He also donated the flag that is in the Northern Light Continuing Care, Lakewood lobby in honor of his wife Madeline. He received numerous medals for conduct and service, was the business manager for Morning Sentinel for 39 years, worked for several governors, and served on many boards in various capacities.

Mr. Cobb had promised John Dalton, Inland president at the time, that he would donate a flag once the lobby renovation was completed but unfortunately passed away in December of 2013 before renovations were finalized. Sue and her brother honored their father’s wish by dedicating his flag in May of 2014.

And now that our lobby has recently undergone another renovation, we thought it was fitting to share the history behind this special United States flag and former Inland president Mr. Cobb with a rededication. We have added Sue’s 45 years of dedicated service to Inland to one of the plaques at the base of the flag which now reads, “Dedicated with love by son, David Cobb and daughter, Susan Cobb, a devoted 45-year employee of Inland Hospital October 2023. The other plaque reads, "In Loving Memory of Nathaniel T. Cobb, Past President of Waterville Osteopathic Hospital (Inland)."
