Call Responsibility
Call Schedule
At Northern Light Acadia Hospital, we have developed a call schedule that allows residents to learn and to gradually develop a sense of mastery and confidence around medical decision making. This aligns with our emphasis on resident wellness and creates a trusting and collaborative learning environment while mitigating the negative impacts of burnout and sleep deprivation. The current call schedule for each year is as described below:
PGY1
Family medicine—no call
Neurology—no call
Emergency medicine—no call
Inpatient psychiatry (4 months)—one day per week of evening coverage; 4PM to Midnight while on this service
PGY2
Consult-liaison psychiatry—no call
Inpatient psychiatry (7 months)—weekend call: 4 times during the course of the year; 8AM to 4PM, Saturday and Sunday; while on the inpatient Adult or Inpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry services
Rural telepsychiatry consult—no call, but varying 8AM-4PM or 4PM to midnight shifts while on this service
PGY3 and PGY4
Weekend call once every 2 months; 8am-4pm Saturday and Sunday.
Weekend Call Responsibilities include:
- Rounding on adults and children on the inpatient units
- Admissions
- Discharges
- Managing psychiatric emergencies and restraints
- Managing outpatient refill requests
Evening coverage is from 4pm-midnight and is hybrid on-site and remote. Responsibilities include:
- Management of phone call requests from the inpatient units
- Placing admission orders and completing medication reconciliations
- Managing psychiatric emergencies
- Face-to-face evaluations for restraints
Rural emergency department telepsychiatry consult shifts are 8am-4pm or 4pm-midnight. Responsibilities include:
- Patient evaluation, assessment, and plan of care
- Determination of level of care or readiness for discharge
- Follow-up care for patients in emergency departments awaiting placement
- Collaborating with social workers, nursing, and physicians in the emergency department
