I have completed a 60 minute nutrition education class about weight loss surgery. This is related to a diagnosis of morbid obesity (BMI over 40) or obesity (BMI 35 - 39.9) with comorbid condition that would be greatly improved by weight loss.
The following points were covered in class: dietary advancement post-operatively, post-operative need to follow a high protein, low fat, low refined sugar diet, recommendations on a healthy eating plan including behavior modification and exercise to promote weight loss prior to surgery to minimize surgical risks and necessary vitamin and mineral supplementation, postoperative consequences (dietary compliance, not participating in a physical activity program, non-compliance with recommended vitamins and minerals, poor follow through with team recommendations), the importance of good glycemic control prior to surgery, other issues specific to diagnosis on physician referral form.
