Dr. Hoekstra grew up in rural central Illinois with her parents and 2 brothers and is a huge fan of both the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. Her husband, John, is a professional musician, and they enjoy traveling together. They have four children. In her spare time, she enjoys outdoor activities and reading a good mystery. She participates in international volunteer medical missions to educate and train those less fortunate. As a full-time breast surgeon at Northern Light Mercy Breast Care in Portland, Maine, she is the Director and Chairman of the Breast Program Leadership Committee. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Board Certified by the American College of Surgeons and has been in practice since 1998. Under her leadership, NL Mercy Breast Care became accredited by the NAPBC in 2011. Prior to that time, she was the Director of the Park Ridge Breast Center in Fletcher, NC, which also became NAPBC-Accredited under her guidance. With this level of expertise, she is now a Site Reviewer for the NAPBC and surveys programs nationwide. Dr. Hoekstra has also been appointed as Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of New England College of Medicine and is active in teaching students from a variety of programs. Dr. Hoekstra has been proactive in the area of Quality Assurance, taking part in the Mastery of Breast Surgery, Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy Registry, CALLER Registry, NQMBC, and the ACS Surgeon-Specific Registry for many years. She has presented posters at the NCBC and ASBS national meetings and has submitted multiple articles for publication. Another area in which she holds special interest is hereditary cancer screening and genetic testing. As an experienced provider, Dr. Hoekstra strives to make sure each patient is well cared for, regardless of whether they are on a journey with breast cancer, returning for annual screenings or are at high risk of breast cancer.
