What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. When you eat, your body breaks food down into sugar (glucose), which enters your bloodstream. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps move that glucose into your cells to be used for energy.

In people with diabetes, the body either doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use it properly. This causes blood sugar levels to rise, which over time can damage your heart, kidneys, nerves, eyes, and other organs.

Types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 Diabetes: The body stops making insulin. Most often diagnosed in children or young adults.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: The body makes insulin, but doesn’t use it well. More common in adults, but increasingly seen in youth.
  • Gestational Diabetes: Develops during pregnancy and usually resolves after birth but increases risk for type 2 diabetes later.
