Sustaining Critical Memory and Aging Services in Maine

Since it’s founding in 2010, Northern Light Acadia Hospital’s Memory and Aging program has had a big impact in Maine through its unique clinical care, research program for more effective treatments and as a leading educator of providers, patients, caregivers, and the community at large. Due to its excellence in clinical care, research, and medical education, the memory disorders program has earned a stellar reputation statewide and nationally. Donations large and small have allowed this program to expand to meet the rapidly increasing numbers of Mainers with memory disorders and those just motivated by healthy aging.

Memory and Aging is comprised of four programs. The Mood and Memory Clinic was founded first as an outpatient program principally for adults with complex brain disorders affecting memory and cognition. The Robert C. Strauss Neurocognitive Research Program is currently the only clinical trials program in Maine for experimental treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. The program brings cutting-edge research to Mainers in coordination with regional and national collaborators. The Maine Initiative for Neurologic Aging and Health (“MAINAH”) was started with a small seed grant to facilitate research and education on healthy brain aging to over 800 Mainers statewide. And more recently, the Maine Rural Dementia Care Training Project, funded by a federal grant, has allowed the program to develop education for hundreds of health care professionals in Maine to become more skilled at dementia diagnosis and to begin training the next generation of professionals.

Advancing Memory Care, Research, and Healthy Aging in Maine

Our work has to expand the meet a growing need to shorten wait times to get into clinic and the new disease-modifying therapies, accelerate the pace of research and provide more support to patients and families. Our growing endowment will do all this and bring our clinical, research, and educational work under one name; Northern Light Memory and Aging Institute.

We cannot do it without you. Increasing our endowment will sustain critical elements of our work desperately needed in our aging communities here in Maine. Your gifts to the endowment, large and small, either one time or over a period of years, will:

  1. Allow our providers to spend more time with patients, families and trainees.
  2. Support dementia care specialists to provide education, guidance and counseling to patients and families at every stage, including healthy brain initiatives to prevent dementia.
  3. Support our research coordinators in creating a statewide Alzheimer’s disease consortium bringing physicians, neuropsychologists, and neuroscientists throughout Maine together to ensure everyone in Maine has access to current diagnostics, personalized medicine, disease-modifying therapies and research protocols in degenerative brain disorders.
