Breast Cancer Awareness Walk highlights the importance of screening, supports women’s healthcare

Date: 10/18/2025

The power of community was on full display on Saturday, October 18 as more than 100 walkers and volunteers turned out for Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital’s thirty-first annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in Pittsfield.

This year’s walk drew survivors, friends and families, local businesses, and hospital staff united by common goals—to raise awareness about the importance of breast cancer screening and to support women’s healthcare close to home. More than $10,500 was raised at this year’s event to fund mammograms, equipment, and other service needs to enhance the care provided at Northern Light Women’s Health in Pittsfield.

“We’re so grateful for everyone who joined us for this community tradition—from longtime supporters to first-time participants,” says Jen Castonguay, director of Ancillary Services at Sebasticook Valley Hospital and coordinator of the event for 20 years. “Every step taken today brings education and resources to those who need it most. The money raised helps us support women who would otherwise not get screened. This is important because when cancer is found early, care can begin sooner when it is easier to treat.”

The top fundraising team was Almy’s Angels, and the individual who raised the most money was Nicole Schissler.

Many of the walkers were survivors or attended in honor or in memory of friends and family who had experienced a breast cancer journey.

“I’ve walked in the event since I moved back to the area a few years ago,” says Lynne Cianchette, a three-time breast cancer survivor. “I was diagnosed after I had my first mammogram in 1992. My message to anyone who is on the fence about getting a mammogram is to not hesitate—it saved my life.”

Women who are overdue for a mammogram are encouraged to make an appointment online at northernlighthealth.org/Sebasticook or at their local hospital. Sebasticook Valley Hospital also offers walk-in mammograms Monday-Friday between 8 am and 2 pm.

Sebasticook Valley Hospital extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who made the Walk a success and looks forward to continuing the tradition next year. Donations for the Walk will be accepted through the end of October. To contribute, please visit northernlighthealth.org/SVHWalk.
