MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

MRIs are safe, painless, and comfortable. There is no radiation and there are no harmful effects of any kind.

MRI is often a complementary procedure to other diagnostic exams such as x-ray, CT scans, or nuclear medicine. For certain studies, the injection of a contrast medium may be necessary to better view specific parts of the body.

An MRI combines a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and sophisticated computers to produce multiple images of muscles, joints, spinal structures, and internal organs. MRI allows doctors to view soft tissue, such as muscles, fat, and internal organs, without x-rays or surgery.

Patients are asked a series of questions before the exam to be sure they do not have metal in their bodies. They will also be asked to remove coins, wallets, clothing with metal on it, and certain types of jewelry before the scan. The MRI makes a loud repetitive knocking noise, and patients are given headphones to listen to music or ear plugs to muffle this noise.

We have partnered with Rayus Imaging to provide a fixed MRI unit with scheduled exams Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4 pm. Please call 207-487-4096 with any questions or concerns.
