Ultrasound is a high-frequency wave that can’t be heard by the human ear and is sent into the body through a “transducer” shaped like a microphone. When those waves reach interior organs they bounce back, creating an echo that forms a picture on a television monitor. The image is then transmitted to the PACS (picture archiving and communication system), and interpreted by a physician who specializes in reading these examinations.
Most examinations take between 30 to 60 minutes.
