Bush grandchildren to chair Gary’s House benefit

Date: 06/08/2023

Bush Family Golf Classic is the largest annual fundraiser for Northern Light Mercy Hospital’s hospitality home

Many familiar faces are expected for the Bush Family Golf Classic at Cape Arundel Golf Club in Kennebunkport on June 13.

Proceeds from the annual golf tournament support Gary’s House, a program of Northern Light Mercy Hospital that provides an affordable home-away-from-home for families with loved ones receiving care at any Portland area hospital or healthcare facility. The hospitality home is a tribute to Gary Pike, a Kennebunk teen who lost his battle to cancer in the summer of 1991. While being treated in Portland and Boston, Gary saw firsthand the financial hardship and stress families experience while being away from home for medical treatment. In 1998, Gary’s dream of making affordable accommodations for families became a reality when the home opened on State Street in Portland.

The annual fundraiser is named in honor of longtime Gary’s House supporter, President George H.W. Bush and his family. Over the years, several generations of the Bush family have chaired the golf tournament. This year’s honorary co-chairs are Bush grandchildren, Marshall Bush and Sam Bush LeBlond. Since 1993, the annual tournament has raised more than $3.5 million for Gary’s House.

“The Bush Family Golf Classic provides vital support so we can offer no cost accommodations to the hundreds of families who rely on Gary’s House every year,” said Charlie Therrien, president of Northern Light Mercy Hospital. “We’re thankful for the generosity of our participants, donors, and the Bush family who have been Gary’s House champions from the very beginning.”
