New imaging technology comes to Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital

Date: 03/03/2025

Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital opened its new state-of-the-art MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) suite on February 19. MRIs are a non-invasive test that produces clear images of internal structures in the human body.  The new technology offers both patients and staff a high-quality, high-touch experience.

A variety of additional services and benefits are included with this new equipment, one of which is the opportunity to offer our patients breast MRIs. Patients who require further imaging after a mammogram will now be able to stay in Ellsworth for that testing, avoiding the need for additional travel to another healthcare facility especially helpful during an anxiety-filled time.

Other benefits of the new MRI technology include shorter testing times, “fast brain” imaging for quick checks during a suspected stroke or brain bleed, motion correction for those patients who may have trouble staying completely still, and reduced breath hold times. The room is carefully designed for an enhanced “ambient experience” incorporating lighting, video projection, and other distractions to provide a more comfortable environment.

“We are thrilled to provide this advanced technology in our new space,” explains Director of Imaging Natalie Stanley, R.T. (R)(M). “Our imaging care team is committed to helping patients reduce their stress and anxiety surrounding the MRI experience. We understand the importance high quality imaging and our patients deserve the best available.”
