Northern Light Home Care & Hospice announces Food Drive for Patients

To help support their patients who are experiencing food insecurity, Northern Light Home Care and Hospice is holding a Patient Food Drive now through September 22. Home Care and Hospice clinicians and home health aides make more than 169,500 in-home visits each year caring for patients across the state. On any given day, they provide direct care services to up to 1,300 patients in their homes. They see first-hand the food insecurity patients are experiencing.
 
“We know that nutrition helps patients have better healing outcomes from a recent surgery or a chronic condition. Worrying about where their next meal is coming from should not be one of their concerns. At Northern Light Home Care and Hospice, we are committed to not only providing compassionate, skilled care to our patients but to helping them with food insecurity,” explains LeighAnn Howard, DNP, MSN, RN, CHFN, vice president of Clinical Operations at Northern Light Home Care and Hospice. LeighAnn furthers shares, “Food is medicine and feeds the soul. We hope you will join us by donating. Together, we can make healthier communities one patient at a time.”

Food items may be dropped off at any of the five Northern Light Home Care and Hospice locations below, Monday through Friday during business hours, or give an online donation by visiting give.northernlighthealth.org/HCHFoodInsecurity. For items donated to the Waterville and Brewer locations, please call ahead to make drop-off arrangements at 207.764.9407.
 
Helpful food items to donate include low sodium dry goods, store-bought canned goods, nutritional protein drinks, and store-bought fresh produce. Northern Light Home Care and Hospice locations in Brewer, Presque Isle, and South Portland will accept frozen foods. Unfortunately, homemade canned goods processed at home will not be accepted.
