Student Volunteers Lead Community Gardening Project

Date: 08/15/2024

Bangor, Maine (August 15, 2024) — Student Volunteer Leaders at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center proudly presented their summer project to hospital leadership on August 13, highlighting their contributions to the medical center and the community. This summer, the students focused on reducing food insecurity in our community while improving patient experience through community gardening.

The student project involves restoring and expanding the community gardens at the medical center’s State Street campus, which will be used in activity programming for long-term patients. The group’s goal is to provide a therapeutic activity while supporting the hospital’s Community Cupboard, a food pantry for patients and community members experiencing food insecurity. Through the project, the student volunteer leaders hope to leave a legacy of providing fresh, nutritious produce to those in need. It will also provide an opportunity for long-term patients to engage in a calming and relaxing activity, providing a bit of respite during their stay.

“We realized that food insecurity was an area where we could support our community,” said Zoe Castrucci, student volunteer. “We already had a community cupboard set up, and we felt we could strengthen that by revitalizing our hospital garden.”

“Our students have committed to making a real difference,” said Stacey Coventry, director, Community Engagement. “By rebuilding and expanding our gardens, they are helping people in our community by providing healthy food options while also giving our long-term patients an activity that can bring comfort and a sense of purpose.”

The group raised funds for the project through student volunteer bake sales—those funds helped them purchase materials and supplies needed to ensure the gardens are ready for planting next year. The students collaborated with the hospital’s Facilities Team to build and refurbish raised beds, bringing the project to life.
