What can you expect from our Family Medicine Residency Program?

Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) offers you the best of both worlds when it comes to teaching and learning family medicine. Northern Light EMMC is a tertiary care hospital that has the size and quality you’d expect from a metropolitan hospital, with an unopposed rural medicine training focus.

The Northern Light EMMC Family Medicine Residency Program is a 30-resident ACGME accredited program with osteopathic recognition. Our training emphasis prepares you to practice in rural settings. Located in Bangor, Maine, Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center is a 411-bed community-owned and governed non-profit hospital that serves as the referral center for northern and eastern Maine. The hospital also serves as the regional tertiary care and ACS-verified level II trauma center.

Why choose Northern Light EMMC Family Medicine Residency?

When you join our Family Medicine Residency Program, you’ll learn from faculty with varied training and interests. Our faculty are the backbone of our clinical teaching. They serve as the attending physicians on our inpatient adult medicine, obstetrics, nursery services, and inpatient osteopathic medicine consult service, and provide precepting within the clinic. Our behavioral medicine faculty lead an integrated behavioral medicine program in our clinic.

We are also fortunate to have an extended network of community-based faculty. Community faculty will precept you at the family medicine center. They offer you an added dimension of experience and knowledge about practicing family medicine in surrounding rural communities.
