Level II Trauma Center

Verified as Level II Trauma Center

Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center is a Level II Trauma Center verified by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma (ACS-COT), and achievement  recognizing Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center's dedication to providing optimal care for injured patient.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the leading causes of trauma are motor vehicle collisions, falls, burns, and assaults. Our Trauma Program admits hundreds of serious injuries each year, about half of which are transferred from community hospital Emergency Departments in its service area.  The Medical Center’s commitment to Maine’s injured includes close partnerships with more than 20 referring hospitals covering a land mass approximately the size of New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts combined.

Trauma Center verification is an evaluation process to assess and improve trauma care. The ACS does not designate trauma centers; instead, it verifies the presence of the resources needed to effectively resuscitate, stabilize, and support the most critically injured patient. These include commitment, readiness, resources, policies, patient care, and performance improvement. Among the elements of a Level II Trauma Center are 24-hour immediate coverage by general surgeons, as well as coverage by the specialties of orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology, and critical care.
