Respiratory Care

The Department of Respiratory Medicine provides acute and non-acute respiratory clinical service to in-house adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. We also provide therapeutic bronchoscopy, pulmonary function testing services and rehabilitative programs to in-house and ambulatory patients, as well as referred services to respiratory home care patients. All services are provided by qualified and trained personnel who are supervised by licensed or credentialed practitioners, and all services are under the direct guidance of our medical director, Dr. Thomas Frey, a member of the Penobscot Respiratory, PA physicians' group. We are committed to providing quality respiratory care, and we conduct on-going evaluations to make appropriate and objective care plans for each patient in our clinical, therapeutic, diagnostic, and rehabilitative areas of service.

Our primary objectives are to:
  1. Determine the needs of our patients' respiratory problems
  2. Perfect established programs
  3. Evaluate and implement new programs in respiratory care
  4. Insure that all equipment is functional, clean, and free from pathogenic organisms
  5. Provide educational programs to Respiratory Medicine and hospital personnel

As a department of Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, which is the tertiary hospital of the Northern Light Health system, Respiratory Medicine cooperates with others in the region to improve access to a full range of high quality healthcare at a reasonable cost. Upon request, we provide consultation on respiratory care procedures and equipment to affiliate hospitals, educational institutions, and other healthcare providers.
