Don’t smoke.

Avoid alcohol.
Alcohol can increase the risk of some cancers and can cause anxiety and depression. It is best to avoid or limit alcohol intake. Learn more here: Alcohol and Cancer Risk- HHS.gov
Limit sun exposure.
Always wear sunscreen, sun hats, sunglasses, or SPF protective clothing if you will be exposed to the sun. Skin cancer is the most common cancer. There are many medications that patients take which may make them more sensitive to sun exposure. It is best to always use sunscreen on any exposed skin. Eat healthy.
Eat a well-balanced heart healthy diet current recommendations encourage more plant based options, increased dietary fiber through fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. Limit processed foods, foods with high trans and saturated fats, and decrease sugary drinks. Learn more at MyPlate.gov and Hannaford offers free dietitian advice.
Maintain a healthy weight.
Some patients may be over or under weight after cancer treatment. It is important to maintain a healthy weight to decrease risk of some cancers and prevent complications from others. Find out more by calculating your Body Mass Index (BMI) with this Calculator.
Exercise.
Develop a regular exercise routine. This can help maintain or increase mobility, maintain a healthy weight, decrease depression and anxiety, while also improving your immune system! Recommendations are for 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week.
Get screened.
