Learn all the basics needed to become a safe babysitter

Northern Light Mayo Hospital will offer Safe Sitter® classes for young teens, grades 6-8, on August 16 and 17. Students who complete the course will learn all the basics needed to become responsible sitters.

The course provides hands-on practice in lifesaving techniques to young teens who are home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting so they are equipped with the skills and confidence to act in an emergency. They learn basic first aid, infant and child choking rescue, and CPR. Students also receive instruction on how a child’s age affects how to care for them, how to prevent problem behavior, and how to run their own babysitting business.

Students who graduate from a Safe Sitter® course receive a completion card demonstrating that they know how to use their skills in situations they encounter.

“This hands-on, interactive class will prepare students to successfully handle the challenges they may face when caring for children,” says Beth Weatherbee, BSN, M. Ed., staff development specialist, Mayo Hospital. “We’ll cover all of the fundamentals of babysitting.”

The class will be held at the Sebec/Borestone Conference Rooms at Northern Light Mayo Hospital. Students are asked to bring a lunch both days. A closing ceremony will be held at the conclusion of the class on August 17 at 3 pm. Students will present posters, demonstrate hands-on skills, and receive their certificates.
