Job Shadow Program

What is job shadowing?

Job shadowing is aimed at helping interns, students, or employees who want to learn about doing a job that they don’t have experience in. This observational opportunity provides a deeper insight into what a job involves than reading job descriptions or asking people questions.

Following an experienced professional who is doing the job you might want to move into can be eye-opening. You will be able to see the hard and soft skills needed as well as how demanding or stressful the job is. While you won’t be doing hands-on work, you do have the chance to ask questions and get real-time answers, gaining a better understanding of the role you are shadowing and being able to gauge what skills you need to do the job well. It can really help you find out if you’re a good fit for the job.

Benefits of job shadowing

Through job shadowing, you can gain:
  • A deeper understanding of the role
  • New skills and ways to work
  • Professional development
  • Knowledge of what hard and soft skills you need
  • A new perspective on how the job operates

When to use job shadowing
Job shadowing is most ideally used when you are exploring a career path. It is also an accessible way to begin professional development and looks good on a resume. This will show employers what knowledge and skills you’ve obtained.
