If you’re in your 40s it’s the right time to talk to your provider about getting a mammogram. After all, mammograms can detect breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat. Unfortunately, in rural Maine, the closest mammography center is often many miles away. But what if the mammography center came to you?
That’s the inspiration behind Northern Light Health’s new mobile mammography unit. The unit is based at Northern Light CA Dean Hospital in Greenville but travels to underserved communities throughout the state to make screening as convenient as possible.
The mobile unit has the same modern 3D technology used in hospitals to provide detailed images. The screening area feels just like a medical office—comfortable, spacious, and climate-controlled. The service is even supported by a women’s health patient navigator who guides women through the screening process.
The team has been screening in Greenville and has traveled to Jackman and Monson for screening events. To see when the mobile unit may be near you, check out our mobile screening schedule.
Given Maine’s rural character, having a mobile unit is key—more women in more places will get screened. And that could save lives!
