Do you put off mammograms because you don’t want to feel like a waffle in a waffle-iron? Mammograms only take a few minutes, but some people experience discomfort during breast screenings due to breast density, hormone levels, anxiety, the skill of the technologist, and the timing. There are a few things to keep in mind ahead of your next mammogram to help make things go more smoothly.
- Start your day with a mammogram. If you’re not looking forward to it, schedule your mammogram first thing in the morning, and make the rest of your day easier.
- Wear a two-piece number. Not everyone is comfortable standing in their skivvies while an imaging tech rearranges your body parts to capture the best image. If you wear a shirt and pants, you’ll only have to briefly disrobe from the waist up.
- It’s all about the timing. If you are not premenopausal, schedule your appointment about a week after your period—that’s a time when your breasts will likely be less tender.
- Avoid the lotion. Avoid wearing any scented items to your appointment, including deodorant, lotion, and perfume. The ingredients in some products can interfere with imaging results, so just remember to bring your anti-perspirant along with you or don’t forget to apply it later on. If you have breast bruising, pain, or nipple discharge, a screening mammogram is not recommended. Please call your provider for an exam or diagnostic evaluation.
