Women’s Health month highlights the need for modern menopause care

May is Women’s Health month and a great time for women to prioritize their health and to educate themselves on the most common health risks. Annual examinations, like physicals, wellness examinations, and mental health screenings are important to promote overall health.

This month offers an opportunity to focus on a period of time in a woman’s life that is still widely ignored and misunderstood: menopause. Today, research, science, advocacy and demand have led to more attention, conversation, better care and treatment.

Historically, menopause symptoms were ignored, and women were encouraged to “push through.” Now, more health providers are helping women manage symptoms with menopause care including Hormone Replacement Therapy as well as non-hormonal treatments such as lifestyle changes and mental health support.

Menopause care is available at Northern Light Women’s Health practices across the state. Northern Light Mayo Hospital’s Kyrsten Sutton, MD is a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner. “We hear about too many women who are suffering with menopause symptoms,” explains Dr. Sutton. “Even in rural areas like we have in Maine, women deserve to have access to providers who will empower them with information, support, and options for treatment to support their health and quality of life.”

Women with questions about menopause are encouraged to schedule an appointment with their primary care or women’s health provider or visit northernlighthealth.org/womenshealth for more information.
