At Northern Light Health, we encourage you to be a champion of your health, the theme for Older American Month, which is recognized in May and raises awareness to encourage older adults to actively manage their health, access preventive care, and maintain independence for as long as possible in their home.
Board certified specialist in geriatric physical therapy Rachel Boutin, PT, DPT, GCS, Northern Light Home Care & Hospice, shares tips to help you be a champion of your health and help you age in place (stay in your home as you age as long as possible).
Keep Moving (Every little bit counts!)
Regular movement helps maintain strength, balance, and confidence. Simple activities like walking, standing from a chair without using your hands, or light exercises can go a long way.
Reduce Fall Risk at Home
Take a look around your space:
• Remove loose rugs and clutter
• Ensure good lighting, especially at night
• Install grab bars in bathrooms and railings on stairs
These small changes can significantly reduce the risk of falls.
Use the Right Tools
Assistive devices aren’t a setback—they’re a strategy for independence. Walkers, canes, reachers, shower chairs, and raised toilet seats can help you stay safe and continue doing daily activities.
Stay on Top of Your Health
Regular check-ups, vision and hearing screenings, and medication reviews help catch small issues before they become bigger problems.
Ask for Help Early
Home health services, physical therapy, and occupational therapy can support you in staying independent longer. Getting help early often prevents bigger challenges later.
Focus on What Matters Most to You
Whether it’s gardening, cooking, or spending time with family—your care plan should support the life you want to live.
Independence doesn’t mean doing everything alone—it means having the strength, support, and tools to live life on your terms.
