Unlocking Maine's natural wonders

We've all heard about the benefits of exercise, fresh air, and connecting with nature for a better life. But how often do we truly embrace these experiences and act on this great advice? In Maine, we're surrounded by stunning lakes, streams, waterfalls, and breathtaking ocean views that beckon us to explore. Let's make the most of these adventures by discussing tips to ensure safe and memorable hiking experiences.

Jessica Aronowitz, MD, orthopedic surgeon, Northern Light Orthopedics has a smart way of approaching hiking, "Working in healthcare, I understand the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle while ensuring personal safety. Hiking offers a fantastic opportunity to engage in physical activity and explore the outdoors, but it's crucial to prioritize proper preparation, equipment, and awareness of your surroundings to prevent injuries and fully enjoy the experience."

 Before your hike:

  • Choose a trail that suits your fitness level and interests. If you love waterfalls, explore some of Maine’s beautiful crashing waterfalls. Research trails in advance using hiking apps and websites.
  • Check the weather forecast, trail conditions, and park regulations.
  • Wear comfortable, layered clothing and sturdy footwear.
  • Pack essentials like water, snacks, navigation tools, and a first-aid kit (make sure your tick remover is included).
  • Learn basic first aid skills in case you or your hiking partner are injured in the wilderness.
  • Don’t rely on your cellphone for communication or navigation. Many of Maine’s most beautiful locations lack cell phone coverage. Having a different way to communicate, like a satellite texting device or personal locator beacon, can save your life. Having a paper map can help with navigation if your cell phone fails you.
  • Let someone know where you’re going, and when you plan to be back.

During your hike:

  • Stay on designated trails to preserve the environment and your safety.
  • Take breaks, hydrate, and refuel as needed.
  • Be aware of wildlife and keep a safe distance.
  • Try to stay in the center of trails and avoid wooded areas where ticks tend to hang out. Be sure to wear protective tick spay or repellant.
  • Be aware of changing weather and trail conditions. Don’t be afraid to change plans if conditions make hiking dangerous.
  • Enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the natural world—that’s why we’re here!

After your hike:

  • Perform a thorough tick check after your hike to prevent potential tick-borne illnesses.
  • If you find a tick attached; follow the instructions on your tick remover or use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin's surface as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure, avoiding twisting or jerking motions, and thoroughly clean the area with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.
  • Reflect on your experience and share your adventures with loved ones. Consider journaling your trip; it will help you remember the details in case you want to repeat the hike.
  • Plan your next outdoor excursion, inspired by Maine's beauty.
  • Continue incorporating the benefits of nature and exercise into your daily life.

With a bit of planning, you can create unforgettable memories and experience the life-changing magic of Maine's great outdoors. Enjoy!
