February is American Heart Month, a time when we focus on keeping our hearts healthy and strong. This year’s theme, “Be the Heart of our Community,” reminds us that we all have a role in supporting each other. When we say “community” we mean whatever community you belong to. Whether it’s your hometown, your church group, your ‘tribe’, or your family, communities come in many sizes and forms.
One group that needs extra support is the LGBTQ+ community. Studies show that LGBTQ+ individuals are at higher risk for heart disease. This isn’t because of who they are, but because of things like chronic stress, discrimination, and difficulty accessing healthcare.
Chronic minority stress—the ongoing worry from facing prejudice—can harm the body over time. Higher smoking rates in the LGBTQ+ community add to the danger. Use of hormone therapy can sometimes affect heart health if not monitored closely. Mental health issues, such as depression or anxiety from stigma, also play a part. Many delay seeing doctors because they fear judgment, leading to problems that could have been caught early.
“Supportive healthcare providers play a vital role in fostering trust, improving access, and delivering equitable care—especially for LGBTQ+ individuals who often face stigma, misunderstanding, or systemic barriers,” says Thorarinn Bjarnason, MD, a cardiologist at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. By creating an intentionally reassuring environment for our patients, we not only honor each person’s identity but also reduce health disparities and improve long-term outcomes. “I am pleased to say that at Northern Light Health, our care is rooted in respect and cultural understanding, so we not only treat a person’s illness—we’re helping build healthier, more resilient communities.”
This American Heart Month let’s be the heart of our communities by encouraging screenings, pushing back against discrimination, and building welcoming spaces. Small actions, like listening or sharing resources, can save lives, and together, we can make every community in Maine a place where everyone thrives.
