August is National Wellness Month, and while “self-care” often brings to mind spa days or vacations, it is really the simple, consistent choices that help us feel our best.
According to Heather Washburn, LCSW, an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) counselor at Northern Light Health, self-care is about caring for your mind, body, and spirit.
“Self-care means taking care of your mind, your body, and your soul and making sure this is an essential part of your routine,” says Washburn. “When we prioritize self-care, we reduce stress, improve our overall health, and show up more physically and mentally present with greater energy.”
One of the easiest ways to build resilience is by practicing gratitude. Washburn suggests weaving gratitude into your daily routine. Say three things you are thankful for while making your morning coffee, during your commute home, or around the dinner table. Being specific can help turn gratitude into a lasting habit.
Spending time outdoors also has a powerful impact on both mental and physical health. Even a short walk outside helps lower stress, boost mood, improve focus, and support better sleep thanks to natural light and time spent in green spaces.
And for those feeling overwhelmed by constant notifications and screen time, a digital detox does not have to mean unplugging completely. Try logging on ten minutes later each morning, taking a walk, calling a friend, or creating a “no screens in the bedroom” rule to give your mind a chance to recharge.
“Be gentle and patient with yourself,” Washburn says. “Remind yourself you are doing the best you can and that you matter. Small changes practiced consistently can have a meaningful impact on your overall well-being.”
