Northern Light Health building path to financial sustainability

Date: 07/01/2025

BREWER, Maine (July, 1 2025) — Like hospitals and healthcare systems in Maine and across the nation, Northern Light Health faces industry headwinds including the proposed changes to Medicaid as well as increased costs for supplies, pharmaceuticals, and labor, combined with reduced post-COVID volumes, low reimbursement and high denial rates from payers, and significant costs for contract and temporary labor. We have a responsibility to those who rely on us for care to examine these realities with both a short and long-term perspective.

To continue delivering on our mission to improve the health of the people and communities we serve now and in the future, Northern Light Health is building a path forward to achieve financial sustainability.

“Our focus is on improving the health of the communities we serve and safeguarding access to healthcare,” says Tim Dentry, president and CEO, Northern Light Health. “The strategies we employ will likely include evaluating our workforce and leadership structure and maximizing revenue opportunities to strengthen our future.”

No hospital will be closed as a part of this work, however some services offered at some locations could change.

“While we do not have all of the answers today, we are committed to keeping our employees, patients, and communities up to date throughout this process,” adds Dentry. “We know that change will be difficult, but it’s what we must do to strengthen our ability to care for our communities for generations to come.”
