Michelle Featured During Like A Boss Event
Business and community leaders, and the just plain curious, came in the early-morning rain today and filled the Portland House of Music to hear our president and CEO, M. Michelle Hood, as the featured guest during the Portland Press Herald’s Like A Boss live Q&A business event.
Lisa DeSisto, interviewer and the Portland Press Herald CEO and publisher, covered a lot of ground in her interview this morning from what Michelle carries in her briefcase on wheels which she takes everywhere, to what keeps Michelle up at night, and the Northern Light Health relationship with MaineHealth.
Michelle discussed her strengths as a leader and how saying, “no” to a challenge is something she still struggles to resist. With her nearly forty years of experience in healthcare delivery, Michelle offered this advice, “Think about your work with your colleagues as if they were your family.” Noting that you may disagree, but still need to take care of each other and find trust. She said after raising two wonderful children (a son and daughter), her biggest accomplishment is, “Leaving the places I’ve served better than I’ve found them.”
Michelle’s first trip to Maine (ever) was in 2005 to meet with the search committee for her current role. Since her hire in 2006, Northern Light Health has accomplished so much including adding hospitals into the system; launching a population health organization; transforming our medical health record, brand, and operations technology; and building new partnerships with renowned organizations such as Dana-Farber and Massachusetts General Hospital to make advanced care accessible to Maine people. Michelle has spent a career transforming hospitals and healthcare systems by developing the people around her, actively listening, and focusing on the patient—all hallmarks of her servant leadership style.
