Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC)
A longitudinal integrated clerkship (LIC) is an alternative way of structuring the third-year clinical experience. As opposed to rotating through six-week blocks, LIC students are embedded in an outpatient primary care clinic for the entire year, with weekly experiences in pediatrics and women’s health. Additionally, they will be exposed to inpatient care, behavioral health, and surgery through a combination of rotational and experiential learning.
The LIC's structure has been proven to teach the essential clinical skills and curriculum of the third year. Across standardized, specialty-specific exams, LIC students consistently outperform Traditional Clerkship students. Participants of the LIC Program gain a deep understanding of patient care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the healthcare system overall. This longitudinal experience allows students to establish meaningful professional connections with their preceptors, who play a pivotal role in shaping their identities as future physicians. Students participating in Northern Light EMMC's LIC Program have enjoyed these benefits, while experiencing rural primary care in Maine first-hand.
