Shipyard Old Port Half-Marathon & 5K to support Gary’s House
Organizers of the Shipyard Old Port Half Marathon & 5K, which will take place on Sunday, June 22, announced this year’s race will provide support for Gary’s House
, a mission-based hospitality home run by Northern Light Mercy Hospital.
Gary’s House is a safe, comfortable, and affordable home-away-from-home for families and individuals with loved ones receiving medical care at any area healthcare facility. Each year, the race benefits a local charity, and the idea to lend support to Gary’s House came from race sponsor Fred Forsley, founder and owner of Shipyard Brewing Company, who has been involved with the Portland hospitality home for many years.
“When families are going through a tough time caring for their loved ones, they don’t want to worry about where to stay and how they’ll pay for it. I’ve been in the hospitality industry for many years, and we’re proud to support Portland’s hospitality home for those in need. We’re lucky to have such a great resource like Gary’s House in our community,” said Forsley.
The annual race attracts thousands of athletes who enjoy the scenic course circling Portland’s perimeter with remarkable views of Casco Bay and the city’s waterfront. Mercy Hospital emergency department medical staff will be onsite again this year to provide medical care for race participants and attendees.
Participants have the opportunity to support Gary’s House through online race registration, and anyone can donate on the Shipyard Old Port Half Marathon & 5K website
