The Medical/Surgical Unit at Northern Light Mayo Hospital provides acute and rehabilitation nursing care services to a variety of patients, from pediatrics to geriatrics. Admissions include orthopedic, surgical and medical patients. Rehabilitative/Swing Bed services include wound care, infusion therapy, end-of-life care and post-surgical recovery. We also provide an outpatient program for services such as wound care, daily injections and infusion therapy.
Mayo’s Med/Surg unit is characterized by a warm, friendly and caring atmosphere that stresses individual attention for all patients. This approach is reflected in outstanding patient satisfaction survey results.
The unit is staffed by registered nurses, certified nurse’s aides, 24-hour hospitalist physician service, and unit coordinators. The nurse manager works in assisting the staff in the coordination of the flow of the unit.
Education is provided to the patient throughout their stay on the diagnosis, medications, activity and other specified doctor orders when discharged. Our nurses work closely with the hospitalist to establish a plan of care to get patients back home as quickly and painlessly as possible. By improving communication and education our patients are less likely to need readmission.
We have an integrated nurse call bell system was put in place that works with the Vocera badge. (A wireless communication system that reduces disruptive overhead paging and improves provider response time for patient care)
Med/Surg is located on Mayo’s second floor and has a mix of semi-private and private rooms with a total of 18 beds. Each room is equipped with televisions for each bed, guest Wi-Fi and pressure relieving mattresses.
Special features of the unit include; two negative pressure rooms for special precaution patients, designated end of life/comfort care rooms, Pyxis medication delivery system with barcode scanning for medication administration, a central nursing station with the computerized order entry electronic medical record charting system, and internet access.
Quiet time is observed daily for patients between the hours of 1 pm - 3 pm. Daily activities are provided for our rehabilitative residents in accordance with the plan specified by the occupational therapists.
The Med/Surg unit also participates in nursing education by providing preceptorships for Eastern Maine Community College, Husson University and the University of Maine at Orono, Augusta, and Fort Kent. We also support clinical preceptorships for certified nursing assistants and unit coordinators.
