The Special Coagulation department at Northern Light Laboratory serves the needs of clients throughout Eastern, Central and Northern Maine, as well as clients in Southern Maine and Vermont. A core group of specially trained technologists, certified by the ASCP Board of Registry, have completed a thorough training program prior to performing specialty coagulation testing. Our technologists are also required to maintain annual competency.
Special Coagulation testing takes an in-depth look at patient’s coagulation system, investigating the causes of hemorrhage or thrombosis beyond the screening process. Because of the degree of specialization, testing is performed on Wednesdays during the first-shift. Accurate testing is accomplished through the use of several unique pieces of equipment, including the BCS-XP analyzer for automated analysis of plasma samples, and the PAP-8E analyzer for analysis of platelet function.
Northern Light Laboratory's Special Coagulation department also works with ARUP Laboratory in Salt Lake City and the Blood Center of Wisconsin to provide exceptional service in processing testing that cannot be performed in the Bangor laboratory. These referrals are processed 5 days per week and in most cases the results are made available the same week.
