Coagulation

The Coagulation department at Northern Light Laboratory serves as the primary test site for Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. Our department also handles the needs of clients throughout Eastern, Central and Northern Maine, as well as locations in Southern Maine and Vermont.

Coagulation testing is complex, requiring in-depth knowledge of a very intricate process whereby the human body balances the components involved in maintaining homeostasis as well as the mechanisms of bleeding and clotting. Accurate testing is accomplished through the use of several unique pieces of equipment, including the ACL TOP 550 which is a fully-automated system for processing chromogenic, turbidimetric and clotting assays, the PFA-100 analyzer for whole blood analysis of platelet function and the VerifyNow used to monitor platelet inhibition to Plavix and other P2Y12 inhibitors.

Our Coagulation department offers the following services to our clients:

  • Prothrombin Time (PT) with INR
  • aPTT for factor deficiency/inhibitor screening
  • Fibrinogen assay
  • Quantitative D-Dimer (with DVT/PE exclusion)
  • Anti-Xa assay for unfractionated heparin monitoring
  • Anti-Xa assays for Low Molecular Weight heparins fondaparinux (Arixtra) and rivaroxaban (Xarelto)
  • Plasma mixing studies
  • Factor assays VII, VIII, IX
  • Thrombin Time
  • Antithrombin
  • Platelet Function Screen (replaces the Bleeding time)
  • Platelet inhibition to Plavix and other P2Y12 inhibitors
  • We also the only laboratory in the system performing assays for Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia (HIT) 6 days per week. This assay is performed during the second shift with same-day reporting, in most circumstances.
