Elective Surgeries and More Postponed
With Coronavirus (COVID-19) spreading in Maine, it is in the best interest of our patients, families, health care workers, and communities that we act decisively to minimize its effect and reach. Critical tools at our disposal include social distancing and crowd avoidance, especially in a period where testing capabilities have not been fully implemented and the infection status of most individuals is unknown.
Hospitals are the front line for treatment of patients with severe COVID-19 infection. Because of this they are relatively high-risk places to come to or visit. We believe that the risk of delaying treatment is far outweighed by the risk of exposure to COVID-19.
For that purpose, consistent with recommendations made by the American College of Surgeons, effective immediately and until further notice, all electively scheduled operations, office visits, diagnostic testing, endoscopies, and other invasive procedures will be evaluated by the healthcare provider who ordered the procedure or visit and considered strongly for postponement until a later date.
Northern Light Health staff will be contacting patients to work with them to postpone and reschedule appointments over the coming days and weeks.
