New leaders in cancer look forward

Date: 12/11/2019

Dr-Sigrid-Berg.jpgBrewer, Maine (December 11, 2019) — Northern Light Cancer Care is pleased to announce that Sigrid E. Berg, MD, MPH, and Sarah Sinclair, DO, specialists in hematology and medical oncology, have accepted new leadership roles, with Dr. Berg as medical director for Northern Light Cancer Care, and Dr. Sinclair as medical director for Northern Light Cancer Research. Both leaders are interested in expanding care and cures for patients in Maine, who are living longer with cancer and being treated for many more years.

“Helping our patients keep all aspects of their care close to home means improving access and affordability,” says Dr. Berg. “We are able to explore more solutions for our patients by working with multidisciplinary teams within Northern Light Health as well as through our collaboration with Dana-Farber Cancer institute.”

Dr-Sarah-Sinclair.jpgDuring a weekly general cancer conference, referred to as tumor board, a team of cancer experts from a variety of departments develop a personalized path forward for patients with challenging presentations. Additional groups meet to discuss thoracic cancers, breast cancer, and genitourinary (GU) tract cancers. Through the Dana-Farber Cancer Care Collaboration, an additional tumor board was added for Northern Light staff to teleconference with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute specialists. The discussions streamline solutions for patients with complex cases and may lead to expedited referrals when needed.

Northern Light oncologists are apprised of leading innovations in cancer treatments by visiting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In turn, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute specialists visit Maine to discuss approaches to care for our aging population.

“By expanding our clinical trials and strengthening the Dana-Farber Cancer Collaboration, we can provide the highest quality care for our patients here in Maine,” says Dr. Sinclair. “We also continue to grow research and treatment by working with partners in Maine, such as The Jackson Laboratory and other oncology practices.”

Future plans at Northern Light Cancer Care include promoting palliative care interventions and adding to the team of cancer experts at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center.
