Requirements

Satisfactory completion of three years (88 semester credit hours) at an accredited college or university is required. Baccalaureate degree requirements of the college or university must be fulfilled when the year of clinical training at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center has been completed. The following courses and criteria are required for admission to the program:

  • A minimum of 16 semester hours of chemistry acceptable towards a major in this field. Biochemistry or organic chemistry must be included.

  • A minimum of 16 semester hours of biology acceptable towards a major in this field. Pathogenic microbiology and immunology must be included. Parasitology is strongly recommended.

  • A minimum of 3 semester hours of college level mathematics.

  • A recommended cumulative and science/math grade point average of 2.5.

  • An official college transcript.

  • Four letters of recommendation with at least two academic references.

  • Personal interviews are requested of selected applicants.

All of the six clinical slots are guaranteed to University of Maine Medical Laboratory Science students, if they meet the minimum requirements. If the time arises that there are not six qualified students, the program will accept students with a Bachelor of Science degree from other institutions.

Persons who have a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university in the United States and meet the above requirements are eligible for admission.

Applicants who met the program's minimum requirements seven or more years before application should update their academic preparation.

Individuals who possess a foreign baccalaureate degree are required to submit a transcript evaluation verifying U.S. baccalaureate degree equivalency.

Students are required to pay the current University of Maine instate tuition, payable semiannually.

Tuition refunds are available on a prorated basis:

  • 1st week - 100%

  • 2nd week - 75%

  • 3rd week - 50%

  • 4th week - 25%

No refund is made after the 4th week.

Books and living expenses are the responsibility of the student. Additionally, we require all students to purchase the University's health insurance or provide evidence of equal coverage.

Students must provide evidence of antibody titers for Rubella, Rubeola, Mumps, Varicella, and a record of receipt of Hepatitis B vaccine and Influenza vaccine (if available).

Background checks are to be instituted by affiliating institutions prior to the student entering the clinical year at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center.

All background checks must be completed and reviewed with notification of concerns submitted to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center a minimum of six weeks prior to the start of the clinical year.

Medical Laboratory Science students are expected to:

  • Prepare for instruction by reading assignments and reviewing notes prior to presentation or practice. If anything is unclear, ask questions.

  • Perform laboratory procedures demonstrating color vision, manual dexterity, visual acuity and the ability to follow directions.

  • Demonstrate the ability to verbally communicate and possess sufficient auditory function to hear phones, pages, instrument and system alarms.

  • Utilize, maintain and troubleshoot equipment.

  • Adhere to all hospital and laboratory safety policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrate good laboratory technique with results falling within acceptable range.

  • Demonstrate organization of work and time by completing assignments by established deadlines.

  • Demonstrate incorporation of theory in laboratory situations.

  • Adhere to program policies regarding attendance and punctuality.

  • Maintain a neat work area.

  • Develop and demonstrate a professional attitude towards faculty, laboratory staff, and other personnel with whom you come in contact.

  • Demonstrate initiative and motivation in performing tasks.

  • Respond to constructive criticism and direction, positively.

Compliance with these non-academic standards will be necessary to participate in and successfully complete Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center's Medical Laboratory Science program.
