Miller Drug to operate under new name as Northern Light Pharmacy
Bangor, Maine (December 17, 2018) As we continue our evolution into an integrated healthcare system, Northern Light Health is changing the names of all our member organizations to reflect our new unified purpose. As part of this evolution, Miller Drug will become Northern Light Pharmacy on January 1, 2019.
Northern Light Health is more than a new name; it’s a reaffirmed promise that we will work hard every day to make healthcare work for Mainers across the state. We want people to associate our new name with that promise whether they visit our primary care offices for checkups, seek out hospice care services for loved ones, or get their prescriptions filled through our pharmacies.
Miller Drug is a key part of our evolution. Since it became a part of our system in 2010, it has exponentially grown from a neighborhood drug store into a multi-site clinically focused community pharmacy comprised of five retail locations, one long-term care pharmacy, a central mail-order pharmacy, a specialty pharmacy, and a variety of educational and counseling services. Between all of our locations, we have more than 80 employees and provide service from Millinocket to Calais to Portland.
“As we evolve into Northern Light Pharmacy,” explained Jeff Doran, vice president of Clinical Services, “we may be changing our name, but our customers will continue to receive the same quality service that they have come to expect. As always, we will continue to expand and innovate our services to best meet the needs of our communities.”
Bill Miller opened Miller Drug on State Street in 1957 and successfully ran that business for more than half a century. What began as a prescription counter in his mother’s variety store, then named Miller’s Cut Rate, grew into a local institution. Northern Light Pharmacy plans to honor Miller’s legacy by placing a commemorative plaque at the State Street store that will outline the history of Miller Drug and the many contributions of its founder. “Bill is a pillar of the Bangor community who is known for his contributions as a small business owner as well as a dedicated community volunteer,” stated Doran. “It is important that we honor that legacy.”
