Making Mental Wellness a Priority is a Great Idea

Welcome to our inaugural Healthy Life Resources (HLR) Blog.

If you are reading this Blog, congratulations! It means you are taking an active interest in your mental health and wellness.

Why is this so important? At some point in everyone’s life, we all struggle with feeling down, anxious or not mentally well. In fact, in any given year, 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience symptoms significant enough to be classified as a mental health disorder.  Over the years we have learned just how interconnected one’s physical and mental health truly is. But, it seems as though we put more time and energy into keeping our bodies healthy, while not developing strategies to manage our ongoing mental health. Over time, this can create an imbalance in our lives, and that can lead to a variety of challenges that affect not only our personal lives, but our ability to be productive at work.

For example, mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression sometimes lead to physical problems such as heart disease, ulcers, headaches and chronic aches and pains. If not treated they can also suppress the immune system, leading to someone getting sick more often, or staying ill for extended periods of time.

It doesn’t stop there. It’s been proven that these same conditions may negatively impact a person’s memory, and also their ability to concentrate and manage multiple tasks. It can even lead to a person avoiding social situations or becoming far more irritable, angry or frustrated than usual.

Our mental health also affects our ability to interact with others in effective ways. When we are depressed, stressed or anxious, we are more likely to feel irritable, frustrated and intolerant.
