Hospital welcomes the first Maine Baby of 2019
Presque Isle, Maine (January 1, 2019) — The first baby in Maine was welcomed just minutes after the new year at Northern Light AR Gould Hospital in Presque Isle. Karly Drue Williams was born at 12:09 a.m. to proud parents Danielle Doyle and Kyle Williams of Houlton. She weighed in at 8 lbs. 1 oz. and was 19 inches long.
The couple made the 45 mile trip to Presque Isle as soon as Danielle’s water broke. Luckily they arrived safely at the hospital well before Karly made her entrance to the world as well as before the winter storm hit the region. When they arrived at the hospital at 5:30 p.m., she was one of three moms in labor. While the other two mothers ended out 2018 with their newborns in hand, Karly held out to be the first baby born in 2019 in Maine.
Karly was delivered by Dr. Quang Nguyen from Northern Light OB/GYN. Nurses from the hospital’s Women & Children’s Unit who were on hand to help with the care of mother and baby were Jessica Bennett, Diane Deschesne, and Kim Tompkins.
Karly is the fourth child in this blended family, joining older siblings Blake, Harmonee, and Maliya. The kids are quite excited about the new baby, especially Blake, according to Mom.
“He was so excited when we were getting ready to go to the hospital. He slipped some Slim Jims in my pocket to help take care of me and was signing to his sister about the new baby being on the way,” explains Danielle. Blake is deaf and already at age 6 is well versed in sign language, as is his sister, nearly two-year old Maliya. Five-year-old Harmonee is learning the skill as well.
Danielle is a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at Madigan Estates in Houlton, while Kyle spends his week working in the woods in the Allagash before heading home to Houlton for the weekend. The couple certainly have their hands full but are looking forward to the new year with the joy of little Karly added to their family.
