For patients of Northern Light Inland Hospital and clinics

Leaders and care teams in Waterville are working together to implement formal plans to wind down services and support you as you transfer your care to other facilities.

Our clinics will be reaching out to patients in the coming weeks regarding moving care to another facility or provider.

  • If you have an appointment or procedure scheduled after May 27, we will be reaching out soon to help plan an alternative.
  • If you have an appointment scheduled before May 27, you should go as planned. If there is any reason that this appointment needs to change, your practice will reach out to you to let you know.

Our team is working to develop a consistent process to provide support as patients prepare to transfer their care to the new provider or facility of their choice. We will be reaching out in the next few weeks to each patient to share more information.

We encourage you to connect with a new provider and care team before you need care. Taking steps now will ensure that you are able to keep your annual wellness visits, screenings, and prescriptions on track.

If you have already selected a new provider, please make sure you request the release of your medical records, so your new care team has access to your medical history and any current treatment plans.

General

Inland is facing many of the same challenges that healthcare is facing throughout Maine and the rest of the country including

  • Rising operational costs - the goods and services we use to care for our patients are more expensive

  • Stagnant or reduced reimbursement rates – insurance payments we receive are not keeping up with the cost to provide care

  • A tight labor market – there is increasing competition for a limited number of qualified employees

The Waterville service area has a very specific combination of needs and resources that make these challenges insurmountable. Inland is near other facilities that offer similar levels and types of care, and the service area does not have the patient volume or payer mix necessary to sustain all of these facilities. The facility has experienced sustained financial hardship for a decade, and it is not feasible to replace or maintain the aging facility or equipment necessary to continue to provide the standard of care our patients need and deserve.

There are no plans to close any other Northern Light Hospitals.

While every hospital faces similar challenges, there are differences in our service areas that make each of our situations different. It is important that we all continue to think strategically about how and where we provide services and make meaningful changes to ensure that we are on a path towards a sustainable future.

The property will be put up for sale. We will ensure the grounds and building are maintained while we steward the sale of the property, with consideration to community needs.
